SMYRNA - Joseph Frank "Joe" Wick of Smyrna died Monday, Sept. 3, 2007, at Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover, after a long illness, surrounded by his loving wife and family. He was 73.
Joe was born during a blizzard March 3, 1934, in Baldwin, N.Y., to the late Joseph C. and Violette (Brunner) Wick.
He was a partner in Wick"s Nurseries of Jamesport, N.Y., with his brother, Frederick J. Wick, established in 1959.
As a young man, Joe built and raced stock cars.
He also enjoyed boating on Peconic Bay with his family.
Joe was a member of the Jamesport Fire Department before moving to Delaware.
In 1972, he and Frederick moved the business to Delaware.
Joe was a co-founder and past president of the Delaware Nurserymen"s Association. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame of the Delaware Nurserymen"s Association in 1995 for his many years of service to the industry.
For several years, he owned and operated Joseph Wick Nurseries in Smyrna.
He also enjoyed collecting and refurbishing antique cars and furniture.
Joe welded beautiful metal sculptures.
He was an avid pilot; his highlight was flying cross country.
Joe was a member of the Smyrna-Clayton Moose Lodge and Antique Automobile Club.
His greatest joy was spending time with his family and friends.
Joseph and Patricia Warner were married Jan. 31, 1959, at St. John"s Roman Catholic Church, Riverhead, N.Y.
He is survived by his wife of 48 years and best friend of 56 years, Patricia Warner Wick; four daughters, Susan Wick of Dover, Carol Baker of Suffield, Conn., Patricia Simpson and her husband Mitchell of Crisfield, Md., and Jennifer Cassidy and her husband Timothy of Riverhead, N.Y.; a son, Joseph C. Wick of Smyrna; nine grandchildren, Lauren, Michael and Christopher Preskenis, Patricia Graham, Grace and Mitchell Simpson, and Kimberly, Anna and Nora Wick; and special friends, Shirlyn Lowman, William Burris and Mary May. He is also survived by his brother, Frederick J. Wick and his wife Mary of Millington, Md.; his sister, Joan Buck of Portsmouth, N.H.; a brother-in-law, Jack Blehart of Dover; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Pauline Blehart.
The Wick family would like to extend sincere thanks and gratitude to the doctors, nurses, and Kent General Hospital for the excellent care given to Joe throughout his illness.
A viewing will be 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in the Faries Funeral Chapel, 29 S. Main St, Smyrna. Services will be held at St. Polycarp"s Church, 135 Ransom Lane, Smyrna, at noon on Friday.
