DOVER - Joseph E. Swain Jr. of Dover died Sunday, July 8, 2007, in Kent General Hospital. He was 82.

Mr. Swain was born Jan. 1, 1925, in Cheswold, to the late Joseph E. Swain, Sr. and Nettie Eskridge Swain.

He served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II in the 494th Heavy Bombardment Group. He worked for 16 years with Playtex. After Playtex he worked for the next 25 years for L.D. Caulk Co. (Dental Supply Co.) as director of manufacturing retiring in June 1988.

Mr. Swain enjoyed working in his flower garden. He loved his dogs, surf fishing, hunting, photography and most of all traveling around the United States to the state capitals with his wife.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Lillian Case Swain of Dover; his son, Joseph E. Swain III and his wife, Deborah of Dover; his daughter, Diane Swain Vreeland and her husband, David of Bowie, Md.; two sisters, Nellie Mae Shears of Dover and Betty S. Hutchins of Dover; three grandchildren, Allison Donohue, Jessica Massie and her husband, James and Elizabeth Swain; and a great-granddaughter, Alexis Marie Donohue.

Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday in Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Del. 10), Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be in Odd Fellows Cemetery, Camden.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Kent County SPCA, 32 Shelter Circle, Camden, DE 19934.
