Joseph David Wills Jr.

DOVER - On July 29, 1934, a male child, Joseph David Wills Jr., was born to Mary Theresa Fountain Wills and Reverend Joseph David Wills Sr. in Germantown, Pa. Joe enjoyed basketball, track, horseshoes, cards, and watching both his daughter and grandchildren swim competitively. Joe was an active participant in the basketball league held at the Wissahickon Boys Club. Joe graduated from Germantown High School in 1952 and immediately entered the United States Air Force. Joe has been a member of the Dover AFB Military Lodge #28 Masonic Order, Suakim Temple #60 Masonic Order, Central Delaware YMCA, and the Modern Maturity Center in Dover over several years. Joseph's career in the air force lasted 28 years in which he earned the rank of Senior Master Sergeant prior to his retirement. During his career, he was a Jet Engine Mechanic (12 yrs), Flight Engineer Technician (10 yrs) and a Flight Engineer Superintendent (6 yrs) which allowed him to travel throughout the world. Joe earned many decorations during his career. He received the Distinguishing Flying Cross, Air Medal with four bronze clusters, Armed Forces Commendation Medal with two bronze oak leaf clusters, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with one device, NCP Professional Military Education Ribbon with one device, Army Good Conduct Medal with two devices, Combat Readiness Medal with two devices, Humanitarian Service Medal, Air Force Longevity Service Ribbon with one silver oak leaf cluster, National Defense Service Medal with one device, Vietnam Service Medal with two silver and four bronze oak clusters, Air Force Outstanding Unit Award Citation, and two bronze oak leaf clusters, Philadelphia Presidential Unit Citation, Republic Gallantry Cross with devices, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Force Good Conduct Medal with one silver oak leaf cluster. Joe served in both the Korean and the Vietnam War. In 1966, Joe was stationed at Tinker Air Force Base where he met the late Elreatha Sykes. During this relationship, Joseph Taylor, his only son was born. Several years later, while stationed in Taiwan, Joe met Chun Kuei Wong whom he married in Holy matrimony in June 1974. During the cold wintry month of December, they welcomed their daughter Theresa. After his retirement from the Air Force, he chose to further his education and attended Delaware State College where he earned a Bachelor's of Science Degree in both Accounting and Business Administration. Joe was on the Dean's List and earned membership as a member of the Alpha Chi and the Mu Alpha Chapter of Alpha Kappa Mu Honor Society. Upon graduation, he accepted employment with the United States Postal Service until his retirement. This man of valor and courage entered into the experience called death on Sept. 2, 2010. Joe was preceded in death by his mother, Mary; his father, Joseph; his sister, Deborah; and his stepmother, Edith. Continuing in the experience of living to remember his life are his wife, Chun Kuei; one son, Joseph Taylor; one daughter, Theresa and fiancé Leslie Dickson; one step-son, Chaur-Ming Shyu and spouse Diana; one step-daughter, Hsiao Ni and spouse Andreas; two brothers, James Ronald Wills and spouse Mintie, and Jerry Wills and spouse Joy; brother-in-law, Richard Carroll; nine grandchildren, Caroline, Hillary, Sandy, Joseph, Thereya, Nhaighere, Parker, De'Andres, and Brandon; and a multitude of additional relatives and friends. Funeral services will be noon, Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Bennie Smith Funeral Home, 717 West Division Street, Dover. Viewing will be two hours prior to the service. Interment will be in Veteran Cemetery, Bear, on Monday Sept. 13, 2010. Letters of condolences and guestbook may be signed at www.benniesmithfuneralhome.com.
