Joseph C. Long, 77

DOVER - Joseph C. Long, also known as "JC," "DJ Long" and "Booloo," of Dover, passed away Friday, June 8, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, with his family at his side. He was 77.

Mr. Long was born April 9, 1930, in Pelham, Ga., son of the late Cephas Long and Lillie Mae Haywood.

He attended Mitchell County Training School in Pelham and was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, where he served as an usher.

After leaving Pelham, Mr.Long enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. After 21 years of honorable service, he retired at Dover Air Force Base.

After retirement, he started K&L Custodial Service, where he served and employed many Delaware residents.

Mr. Long also worked as a security guard and as a disc jockey at WDOV, where he was the first African-American disc jockey in Dover.

At an early age, he married the former Jean Johnson and fathered two children with her, Earl Johnson of Tennessee and the late Yetta Harris.

Mr. Long later married Barbara (Blake) Long and fathered three children with her, Debra White and Jacqueline Tiller, both of Magnolia, and Keith Long of Falls River, Mass.

He loved people, loved to talk and loved to have a good time. He will be sadly missed, but never forgotten.

Mr. Long was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert Bolden, Preston Hopkins and Julius Hopkins; a sister, Polly Haywood; and a daughter, Yetta Harris.

In addition to his immediate family, he is survived by a sister, Cheryl Long Bowdry of Georgia; a devoted cousin, the Rev. Paul Hayes and his wife Muzella of Newark; his daughters-in-law, Martha Long and Greta Johnson; a son-in-law, Wayne Tiller Sr.; nine grandchildren, Shalaundria Harris, Senior Airman Robert Harris, Shaun Samuels, Keisha Long, Markia Long, Earl Johnson Jr., Jasmine Tiller, Wayne Tiller Jr. and Lafon Tiller; and a host nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Union Missionary Baptist Church, where friends may call two hours prior.

Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday in Delaware Veteran Cemetery, Bear.
