NEWPORT - Joseph A. Sewell Jr., formerly of Newport and Lewes, died on Saturday, Sept. 15, 2007, in Bradenton, Fla. He was 77.

Born in Pottstown, Pa., on July 30, 1930, Mr. Sewell was a son of the late Joseph A. Sewell Sr. and Ruth (Sell) Sewell.

He left school as a young man to enlist in the U.S. Navy and proudly served his country during World War II.

Following his military service, he went on to enjoy a long career with the Pennsylvania Railroad, first as an engineer and later as a trainer and supervisor.

In his leisure time, Mr. Sewell greatly enjoyed attending thoroughbred races at Delaware Park, fishing and watching war movies.

He was also a wonderful storyteller and delighted in entertaining family and friends with his many tales.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Thelma Sewell, who died in 2005.

He is survived by his second wife, Jean Sewell; two daughters, Susan Cipolla and her husband, Michael of New Castle; and Nancy Moyer and her husband, Wayne of New Castle; his brother, Charles P. Sewell and his wife, Jane of Lewes; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be 12:30 p.m. Friday at the Spicer-Mullikin Funeral Home, 121 West Park Place, Newark, where friends may call after 11:30 a.m.

Interment will follow in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
