DOVER - Johnny Green Smith, of Dover, died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Milford Memorial Hospital. He was 85. Mr. Smith was born Jan. 16, 1926, in Deep Run, N.C., to the late Herman Leo Smith and Carrie Belle Cunningham Smith. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving in the United States Army from 1951-1953. Mr. Smith received his Bachelor's Degree in Education in 1959 and his Master's Degree in Education in 1964, both from East Carolina University, Greenville, N.C. He taught in Sudlersville, Md., in 1959. Mr. Smith then became principal of Crumpton Elementary School in Crumpton, Md. He was also principal of Lakeview Elementary School, Benjamin Banneker Middle School in Milford and Allen Freer Elementary School in Dover, retiring in 1990. Mr. Smith was a member of Maple Dale Country Club and enjoyed playing golf. He loved helping family, including his nieces and nephews with acquiring their education. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Elizabeth Ann Harrison Smith of Dover; his daughter, Shelly Ann Elliott and her husband, David T. Elliott of Richmond, Va.; grandchildren, Garland "Garry" Hurst Moore IV of Dover, and Eliza Hollister Moore and Abigail Christian Elliott, both of Richmond; and nieces, Velenda Smith Courtney and husband George, Jr. of Dover, and Susie LeMay of Daytona Beach, Fla.; and many other nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Frederick, Leo, Theodore and James Henry Smith; and two sisters, Gaynelle Rouse, and Alma Rhew, all of North Carolina. A Celebration of Life Ceremony will be noon, Friday, May 13, 2011, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Family will receive friends at 11 a.m. for one hour prior. Interment will be at the Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Millsboro. In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made to the VFW, 3238 Old Camden Rd, Camden, DE 19934; or to the Unitarian Universalists of Central Delaware, P.O. Box 73, Camden, DE 19934.
