John H. 'Capt. Jack' Evans, 87
MILLVILLE - John H. "Capt. Jack" Evans, passed away on Tuesday Sept. 23, 2008, in Atlantic General Hospital in Berlin after a short illness. He was 87. Jack was born in New York on Dec. 24, 1920, to the late Chester and Anna Evans. He was a World War II Navy Veteran. Jack retired in 1986 as a New York Harbor Tugboat Captain after 30 years. He was a licensed private airplane pilot, which he was proud of. Jack also enjoyed working with his hands and in recent years had built and sold several utility trailers. He was a member of the Doric Masonic Lodge in Millville, 32nd Degree Mason, Ocean View VFW, Dagsboro American Legion, past member of the Millville Fire Department, and was on the committee for the New Indian River Inlet Bridge. He was also a member of the Delmarva International Flying Farmers Association. He was preceded in death by his wife of 59 years, Betty Evans on May 31, 2008; and his sister Thelma Taylor. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Carol Evans of Dagsboro; grandson and wife, J.S. and JoAnna Evans of Frankford; two great-grandsons, John and Joel; a brother and sister-in-law, Allen and Marie Evans; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. A viewing will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday in the Frankford chapel of Melson Funeral Services on Thatcher Street in Frankford. A graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday at the Millville Methodist Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Seaside Christian Academy, 12637-A Ocean Gateway, Ocean City, MD 21842.
