John Dilks Garton Sr., 86
MIDDLETOWN - John Dilks Garton Sr. of Middletown passed away on Thursday, June 14, 2007, in Christiana Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. He was 86.
Mr. Garton was born Feb. 4, 1921, in Millington, Md., son of the late James L. Garton and Lillian (Wallace) Garton.
He proudly served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Philippines. After receiving an honorable discharge from the Army in 1946, he returned to Delaware and worked as a truck driver on the construction of the Chesapeake City Bridge. On one "Friday the 13th" in 1948, he began working for Anchor Motor Freight in Newport, as a yardman.
Mr. Garton was a dedicated and valued employee of Anchor for 38 years. He was also a proud member of the Teamster"s Union, Local 326.
In addition to his job, he loved to keep his yard neat, his cars and trucks sparkling clean, and talk about the animals that he had as a youth. More then once he entertained his family with his story of dressing up his pet dog and sitting him down at the breakfast table just to aggravate his mother, to whom he was devoted.
Mr. Garton was loved by many dear friends and family and will be greatly missed; his kind hearted spirit will be remembered by those who were blessed to know him.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a beloved son, John Keith; two brothers, William and Franklin; and three sisters, Edna, Helen and Marian.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years, Agnes Cochran Garton; three daughters, Mary Anne Larsen of Dover, Barbara Garton Erskine and her husband, Alfred of Newark and Helen Elizabeth Garton of Germantown, Md.; a son, John Dilks Garton Jr. of Middletown; four grandchildren, John Eric Larsen, Theodore M. Larsen, Brian M. Erskine and Cameron E. Garton; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Anna Williamson of Wilmington.
