DOVER - Joan Poole Brown, of Dover, died on Wednesday, Aug. 4, 2010, while at her vacation home in Milam, W.Va. She was 76. Mrs. Brown was born Oct. 28, 1933, in Bethesda, Md., the daughter of Myrtle Shearer Poole and Earle Benjamin Poole, Sr. She grew up in Rockville, Md., and graduated from Richard Montgomery High School in 1951. She fell in love with and married Kenneth K. Brown on Sept. 16, 1951, and together, they shared over fifty years in a wonderful marriage. Mrs. Brown worked for and retired from the State of Delaware Department of Natural Resources where she served as Chief of Real Estate for the Division of Parks and Recreation. Her devoted service and outstanding work ethic resulted in her appointment to the Delaware Parks Advisory Council after retirement. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church, a Past President and member of the Ladies of the Elks #1903, a Past President and member of the Dover Lioness Club, and worked tirelessly for these service organizations in an effort to provide assistance to the Community. Anyone who knew Joan was touched by her vibrant personality. She loved life and selflessly devoted herself to her friends, her community, and charitable activities such as the Annual Lions Club Chicken Fry, and organizing the feeding of the participants of the Habitat for Humanity Project. She was a wonderful role model, who loved and cared for her family first, and served as the primary caregiver for her Mother. One of Joan's favorite pastimes was spending time with her many friends at her vacation home in Milam, W.Va. Mrs. Brown was preceded death by her father and her husband. She is survived by her mother, Myrtle Edwards of Dover; a son, Michael K. Brown and his wife Mary L. of Hartly; a daughter, Janet S. Shane and her husband George of Magnolia; two grandchildren, William M. Jopp of Wyoming, and Kelly S. Bennett of Wyoming; and great-grandchildren whom she adored, Alexis B. Jopp and Aiden M. Jopp of Magnolia, and Colson K. Bennett of Wyoming; a brother, Earle B. Poole, Jr., and his wife Linda of Ocean City, Md.; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her extended family included a step grandchild, F. Scott Shane and his wife Michaela of Smyrna, and a step great-grandchild, Brian Shane of Smyrna. She will be sorely missed by her entire family and her many friends and relatives. Funeral services will be 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 12, 2010, at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Dover Lioness Club, 111 Third Street, Wyoming, DE 19934. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
