Jerrye Ernestine Mears, 75
Jerrye Ernestine Mears of Smyrna died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 75.
Mrs. Mears was born Sept. 1, 1931, in Townsend, Va. She was the middle of three children born to the late Edward and Sarah (Nottingham) Downing.
She moved with her family at a young age to Delaware, where she received her early education at Lee's Chapel Elementary School, Louis L. Redding Junior High and Delaware State High School. She attended Delaware State College, now known as Delaware State University.
Mrs. Mears was a loyal employee of Leed's Travelware and later the Delaware Home and Hospital for the Chronically Ill, where she retired.
She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age. She attended Calvary Baptist Church in Middletown. In 1949, she met Mahalon Mears and they were married in 1951.
She enjoyed cooking and was a loyal friend.
Mrs. Mears later moved her membership to Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church. She was a member of the choir, a financial treasurer and a vice president of the Stewardess Board there. She also held the position of the pastor's steward and was a member and treasurer of the Missionary Society.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Mahalon Mears; two children, Mahalon Mears of Smyrna and Vesteria (Mears) Wilson of Dover; three grandchildren, Mahalon Gassaway, DeVontae' Wilson and Arielle Wilson, all of Dover; a sister, Muriel Jones of Newark; a son-in-law, Dwayne Wilson; a future daughter-in-law, Penny Thomas; a stepdaughter, Debbie; two grandchildren, Darin and David; two sisters-in-law, Gertrude Taylor and Katherine Mears; two brothers-in-law, Homer Lecato and Henry Mears; five nephews, Douglas, Ricky, Keith, Malcolm and Mark; two nieces, Celestine and Vashti; a devoted friend, Minnie Johnson; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 11 a.m. Friday in Bethel AME Church, 235 E. Commerce St., Smyrna, where friends may call two hours earlier.
