GREENVILLE, N.C. - Jerry N. Hobbs, IV (JN) died from a heroin overdose on Wednesday, Sept. 6, 2017 in a halfway house in North Carolina.
JN was born on Jan. 6, 1984 in Viola. He attended Polytech High School and worked in the HVAC field until recently and then was a mechanic.
For most of his adult life JN battled the continuous cycle of rehab, treatment, sobriety and relapse that an addiction to drugs perpetuates. However, when clean he enjoyed motor sports, farming with the family and spending time with his nephew.
JN was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Harold Kelly; paternal grandmother, Vonna Hobbs; and his younger brother, Jeremy who lost his own battle with drug addiction in 2011. Because of that tragic and unexpected loss, JN's family and friends knew all too well how his story could end. But, they held out hope for a successful recovery until the end. The hope they are left with now is that those battling addiction are influenced by these tragedies to get the help they need and that those whose lives have mercifully not been touched by addiction, never will be.
JN is survived by his parents, Jerry and Jennifer Hobbs of Viola; his brother and sister-in-law, Kevin and Melinda Hobbs and their children Brayden and Arianna of Akron, Ohio; paternal grandfather, Nick Hobbs of Felton; maternal grandmother, Carol Chavis of Palatka, Fla.; and a large family of aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Because his family has been mourning the loss of JN for quite some time as the young man they knew him to have been and the way of life that they prayed he would be able to return to without relapsing; and because friends and family have already given all the support possible that he, his parents and brother could have ever asked for, no funeral or memorial service will be held. The family requests that you remember JN in your own way and suggests contributions to Colony of Mercy c/o America's Keswick, 601 Route 530, Whiting, NJ 08759 or One Way Out Ministries, 8345 Westville Road, Wyoming, DE 19934 to aid in the work they do with addiction treatment and prevention.
