HARTLY - Jean Roland of Hartly, formerly of Viola, passed away on August 31, 2016, of a heart condition at Meadow Brook Nursing Home in Middletown. She was born on May 6, 1941, and was married to Charles Roland for 42 years, before his death in 2010. Jean graduated from Felton High School and attended nursing school and worked in retail before finding her true calling as a wife, and mother. She and her husband operated Roland's Tree Farm for over thirty years, reveling in the season by bringing joy to everyone who bought a Christmas tree. She loved friendly competition, winning many card and board games and was an avid baseball fan. She was a master seamstress, and grew and preserved garden vegetables and fruits. Her bread and butter pickles and apple butter were legendary. Jean was a member of the service organization, the Rebekah Assembly of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, acting twice as the State President. Her service extended to tending to neighbors in her community in Viola. Folks knew they could stop in anytime for a cup of coffee and engaging conversation. She will be most remembered for her caring nature, generosity and sense of humor. She is survived by her son, Robert Roland, of Hartly; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Jason Bowden, of Barclay, Md.; and grandson, Shelby Roland, of Hartly. In her death, she's joining her husband, Charles; parents, Ralph and Freda Hubbard; and brother, Donald Hubbard. There will be an opportunity to pay respects to the family and to celebrate Jean's life from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, September 10, 2016, at her residence. In lieu of flowers contributions, the family asks that her memory be honored through random acts of kindness. Arrangements handled by Berry Short Funeral Home, Felton.
