GEORGETOWN – Jay J. King, Sr. passed away Friday, Oct. 23, 2015, surrounded by family, at the Delaware Hospice Center, in Milford. He was born Aug. 15, 1940, to the late Edward King and Helen Stevenson, in their Georgetown home. During his late teen years, he worked for James Marvel Farm, played football, basketball, baseball, and was a member of the band and the Future Farmers of America organization. Jay graduated in 1958 from Georgetown High School and two years later married Bonnie (Megee), his loving wife of 55 years. He joined the Delaware National Guard, was a lifetime member of Grace United Methodist Church, a Georgetown Little League coach and refereed high school and college basketball. An avid baseball card collector, sports were always a large part of his life. Jay felt especially accomplished when he was selected by his peers to officiate two state high school championship games at the University of Delaware in 1974 and 1975. After 21 years with the Department of Transportation, Jay retired in 2002. He loved watching NASCAR, his favorite driver being Jeff Gordon. Jay also enjoyed working in his yard and garden, reading novels and he especially loved spending time with his family. Many summer weekends of Jays were spent watching his granddaughters played travel softball. He was always the life of the party and loved making others smile and laugh with his unique sense of humor and by playing the spoons. In addition to his parents, Mr. King was preceded in death by his granddaughter, Brittany "Bitty" Hood. In addition to his loving wife Bonnie, he is survived by his two children: Jay J. King Jr. and his wife Lisa, and Karla Oney and her husband Darryl, all of Seaford; four granddaughters, Megan and Mandi Hood, and Sarah and Stacey King; three great-grandsons, Jayden Hood, Mason Woodyard and Casen Palmer; his sisters, Faye Johnson, Jean Steele; and brother, Wayne King. A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market Street, Georgetown, DE with visitation starting at 10:00 am. Burial will immediately follow at Union Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Georgetown Little League: P.O.
