Janice (Swimley) Scott, 96
MILFORD - Janice (Swimley) Scott, of Milford, formerly of Laurel, Md., passed away Wednesday, March 19, 2008, at home. She was 96.
Mrs. Scott was born June 10, 1911, in Winchester, Va., daughter of the late Lonzo Ray and Maude (Miller) Swimley.
She attended grade school at Stuart Hall Episcopal School in Staunton, Va. She graduated from Hagerstown (Md.) High School and took postgraduate courses at Allegany High School in Cumberland, Md.
Mrs. Scott was employed as the assistant to the principal for 30 years at O.W. Phair Elementary School in Laurel, retiring in 1973.
While in retirement, she compiled several manuscripts devoted to family genealogy, one of which was accepted by the NSDAR Library in Washington, D.C.
As matriarch of the family, she initiated family reunions. Her trust in God and importance of family were her two pillars.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Milford New Century Club and a member of the Christ Episcopal Church in Milford.
In addition to her parents, Mrs. Scott was preceded in death by her husband, Henry M. Scott Jr., in 1985.
She is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Janice D. and Gardner Shugart of Milford; a son and daughter-in-law, Henry M. III and Martha Scott of Beaufort, S.C.; a sister, Ellen S. Voss of Cumberland; six grandchildren, Carrie Townsend and her husband Fred, Gardner Shugart III and his wife Irina, Catherine Shugart, Richard Scott, John Scott and James Scott; a great-grandson, Rick Townsend; two nephews, Fred Voss and Alton Middlekauff; and two nieces, Susan Sealock and Ellen Voss.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Friday at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 N. Church St., Milford. The family will greet friends after the service in the church.
Burial will be held at the convenience of the family.
Instead of flowers, the family has requested memorial contributions to Christ Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 191, Milford, DE 19963; or to Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, DE 19963.
