MILFORD - Janet Elizabeth Townsend passed away Monday, Feb. 8, 2016 at her home. Janet was born June 29, 1931 in Dover to the late John Wesley Smith and Agnes Virginia Sudler. She worked as a Unit Clerk in the maternity ward and later in the collection department at Milford Memorial Hospital for 17 years and retired in 1989. After retiring she devoted her life to caring for her family, friends and many others. She had an endless zest for life and energy. She was passionate about animals, sewing, gardening, baking and caring for her home. Janet was a faithful member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where she fulfilled callings in Relief Society, Sunday School and the Young Women's program. She was a volunteer for many years in the Genealogy Library as well as a visiting teacher for the church. Janet was known for her generosity and supported many charities. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Luther Townsend. She is survived by her children, Shelly Hostedler and her husband Rick of Lincoln, Del., Thomasa Evins of Felton, Del., Dana Townsend of Milford, Del. and Stephanie Bradley and her husband Michael of Milford, Del.; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Friday, Feb. 12, 2016 at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Friends may call from 11 to 1. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Helen F Graham Cancer Center, 4701 Ogletown Stanton Rd, Newark, DE 19713 or Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901.
