MILTON - Jane G. Phillips of Milton went home to be with the Lord Saturday, June 30, 2007, in her home.
Jane was born and raised in Denton, Md., daughter of the late William Richard Sr. and Victoria Grace Richard Garey.
She was a homemaker and retired as a substitute teacher with the Cape Henlopen School District.
Jane was an avid bird watcher and enjoyed puzzles.
She was very civic minded, volunteering countless hours for area organizations. She volunteered for 25 years with the American Red Cross and 23 years ago initiated the lap robe program, helping make and supply handmade blankets to those in need. She was instrumental in organizing the Prison Fellowship and was very active in its ministries. Jane was also active in the Delaware Foster Parent Program.
Jane was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Homemakers Extension Club and the Gideon"s.
She also loved her church; she was a charter member of Eagles Nest Fellowship Church and had been active within the church and school for many years. She taught Sunday school, was active in the CFO and prepared the thousands of box tops that are turned in for the Box Tops for Education program.
Jane was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served as a WAC from 1943 until 1946.
In addition to her parents, Jane was preceded in death by her husband, John Denney Phillips, in 1992; and a brother, William Richard Garey Jr.
She is survived by a son, Robert Denney Phillips of Amarillo, Texas; a daughter, Adele J. Nye of Millsboro; three grandchildren, Timmy Phillips, Marty Phillips and Donna Stroud; and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be noon Friday at Eagles Nest Fellowship Church, 26633 Zion Church Road, Milton. Friends may call Thursday evening from 7 to 9 p.m. in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 416 Federal St., Milton.
