James S. 'Pop Sam' Barrineau, 65

DOVER - James S. "Pop Sam" Barrineau of Dover, formerly of Florence, S.C., died Wednesday, April 18, at Heartland Hospice House, Wilmington after a long illness. He was 65.

Pop was born Sept. 4, 1940, to the late Henry and Pearl Elease Barrineau in Kingstree S.C.

He attended public schools in South Carolina and began work as a swimming pool construction worker.

James became known as "Big Guy," and he continued to construct and build swimming pools for both public and private owners.

He worked until he had a stroke in 1989 that left him paralyzed on one side.

He and his surviving wife moved to Dover in 1994 to be near their daughter.

Once settled in Delaware, "Big Guy" quickly adopted the name "Pop Sam" to all who came to know him.

Pop attended the Adult Day Program at the Modern Maturity in Dover. His favorite part of the day began when he boarded the van and rode to surrounding areas to pick up his newly found friends. He enjoyed arts and crafts, activities and field trips planned by the staff daily.

Pop's favorite pastime was recording TV shows on VHS cassettes while sitting on the side of the bed or in his favorite chair.

Instead of popcorn, he would have a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his stepfather, Alexander McCray; five uncles; and five aunts.

He is survived by his wife, Pearline "Mom Pearl"; two sisters, Maryann and her husband, Rufus Carmichael of Charleston, S.C. and Shirley and her husband, Allen Daniels of Florence, S.C.; 12 children, David and his wife, Sandra Mouzon of Florence S.C., Elease and her husband, Stanley McGill of Lancaster, Pa., Michele "Renee" Williams, James Lee, Sammy Lee, Christopher Barrineau and LeQuan Barrineau, all of Dover, Andrew Jackson of Florence, S.C., Jerry and his wife, Peggy Dickerson of Atlanta, Ga., Jimmy Dickerson and Belinda Dickerson, both of Florence, S.C., and Emma Jean Ellis of Florence, S.C.; a devoted niece, Elishann Harrell of Dover; 32 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one aunt, Sally Burgess of Sumter S.C.; one uncle, Rudolph Burgess of Florence, S.C. and a host of other family members and friends.

A public viewing will be held on Monday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover from 5-7 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday at Emanuel Pentecostal Church of God, Center Street, Camden. A viewing will be held at the church on this day from 4-6 p.m. Funeral services will begin at 6 p.m.

Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Garden, Florence, S.C.
