James Oliver Groves

CECILTON, Md. - James Oliver Groves, 89, of Cecilton, died Feb. 17, 2011 in Union Hospital, Elkton. Mr. Groves was born on Jan. 5, 1922 in Kennedyville, son of the late Arthur 'Bootie' Groves and Mabel Cleaver Groves. He was a 1938 graduate of Chestertown High School. Jim enlisted in the U.S. Army during WWII, serving in Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe with the 911th Ordnance for two years. He had many World War II stories to share and was very proud of his service to his country. Jim's career as a farmer began in 1945 working as a manager for area beef farms. He was a charter member of the Upper Bay Ruritans and a 50 year member of Harlon Valley Masonic Lodge 827 in Woodstock, N.Y. He was also a member of American Legion Post 15 and VFW Post 8175 in Elkton. Mr. Groves was preceded in death by his wife of 46 years, Lillian Hoffner Groves in 1993. He is survived by his two daughters, Lynda Jeanes and her husband Bill of Earleville, and Nancy Wallace and her husband Lindy of Chesapeake City; four grandchildren, William Jeanes and his wife Jenn of Warwick, Alison Jeanes of Baltimore, Aaron Wallace of Newark, Del., and Ashley Pierce and her husband Kyle of Elkton; a great-grandson, Kole Oliver Pierce; and two sisters, Louise Baum of Kennedyville, and Elizabeth Money of Chestertown. Friends may call on Wednesday, Feb. 23 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, where funeral service will be held on Thursday, Feb. 24 at 11 a.m. Burial in Zion Cemetery, Cecilton.
