James M. Cullen Sr.

DOVER - James M. Cullen Sr., 83, of Dover, passed away Wednesday, Feb. 9, 2011, in Nanticoke Memorial Hospital. James was born on July 29, 1927, in Bishopville, Md., son of the late James Vincent and Alberta (Mumford) Cullen. After high school he was drafted by the Brooklyn Dodgers until he entered the military service with the Army during World War II. He was a carpenter and a member of The Carpenter's Local #626. He worked as a superintendent for J. Roland Dashiell of Salisbury, Md., and ended his career as a state building inspector for Delaware School Auxiliary Association. His hobbies included baseball and he was an avid sports fan always following the Phillies, Eagles and Notre Dame. James is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Joyce Cullen; three children, James M. Cullen, Jr. and his fiancé, Cathy Pursell of Dover, Thomas Cullen and his wife Manuela of Dover, and Karen Sutfin and her husband Derek of Chicago, Ill.; two brothers, John Cullen, and Gerald Cullen, both of Dover; and three grandchildren, Julia Loiacono, James M. Cullen III, and Tyler Cullen. Services will be noon, Monday, Feb. 14, at the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may gather one hour earlier. Burial will follow in Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to Holy Cross Church, 631 S. State St., Dover, DE 19901.
