DOVER - James L. Glenn Jr. of Dover succumbed, after a valiant and gut-wrenching fight with cancer, Monday, Feb. 18, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 66.

Mr. Glenn was born July 21, 1941, in Troy, Ala., son of the late James L. Sr. and Annie C. (Wesley) Glenn.

In his youth, he was an exceptional athlete in several sports.

Mr. Glenn spent most of his adult life in New Jersey, nearly 30 years in East Orange before moving to Lakewood in 1997. He moved his family to Dover in 2004.

He was a hard worker and excellent provider. For 20 years, he worked at Hatfield Wire and Cable Co.; and from 1982 until his retirement in 2002, he was employed at Public Service Gas and Electric in Cranford, N.J.

For years, Mr. Glenn was an accomplished cyclist who was the proud owner of several motorcycles. He also was an avid basketball fan and former player. He was exceptional at everything he did. He was an ideal public servant. He was a strong black man who will be remembered for his hearty laughter, his Christian spirit, his warm heart and giving soul. To family and friends, Deacon Glenn was considered an "extra special" father, husband, church member, conversationalist and sports enthusiast. To all, James L. Glenn Jr. will be remembered as a quintessential, heaven-sent human being. He will truly be missed.

Aside from his family, Deacon Glenn worshiped at his church - Jesus Is Lord Church of Deliverance, where Overseer Bonnie Bigelow, the pastor, made a major difference in his spiritual life and Christian experience - and expressed his love for gospel music. Three of his favorite songs were "This Is the Air I Breathe," "Never Would Have Made It" and "Sovereign." For years, he was an active and passionate member of the New Jersey Mass Choir.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents.

He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Thalia M. Glenn; a devoted son, Eric R. Glenn; three grandchildren, Shakur, Eris and Nyasia; four sisters, Joanne King, Claretha Potts, Denise Williams and Janet Jenkins; two brothers, David Glenn and Dewayne Glenn; two sisters-in-law, Ozella Ingram and Celia O. Jones; two brothers-in-law, Bristol S. Leake and Milton E. Leake; six uncles and three aunts by marriage, Eddie Lee and Vera Glenn, Alphonzo and LuLu Glenn, Lamar Glenn, the Rev. Willie J. Glenn, Harvey Glenn, and Eugene and Mattie Glenn; three additional aunts and an uncle by marriage, Minnie Baker, Johnnie Ruth McClure, and Nora Pearl and Buster Townsend; and a plethora of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who mourn his passing but revere his spirit and spunk.

Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday in Jesus Is Lord Church, Georgetown, where friends may call two hours earlier.

Burial will be in Milford Community Cemetery.
