DOVER - Irma DiMondi Burwell of Dover, Del., formerly of New Castle, Del. passed away peacefully on Monday December 28, 2020 in Dover, Del.
Born in New Castle, Del. on March 22, 1924 to the late Giovanni "John" DiMondi and Esperanza DiMondi, Irma graduated from Ursuline Academy and Beacom College (now Goldey – Beacom College) in Wilmington, Del.
She began her career working for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at the Greater Wilmington Airport during the Second World War where she met the love of her life, husband of 66 years, Richard E. Burwell of Bocyrus, Ohio.
While Richard worked for her family's business, Delaware Block Company in New Castle, they acquired and operated two properties on Delaware Street located directly across the street from the Old Court House and bordering New Castle's Battery Park. In one property, they operated The Coffee Shop and Restaurant for many years in the 1960s and 1970s.
For over 50 years, Irma and her husband, Richard, lived in and operated The William Penn Guest House which dates back historically to 1683. Irma truly enjoyed operating the Guest House which served as a catalyst to meeting new lifelong friends from around the world, which friendships endured until the time of her death.
Irma and Richard moved to Dover in 2007 to live near her sister-in-law and best friend Jane DiMondi and nephews Francis DiMondi, Jr. and William DiMondi. For the past ten years Irma has been an active member of The Dover Century Club and treasured the time spent with her closest friends and fellow club members.
She is survived by her sister-in-law, Jane DiMondi of Dover; nephews, Francis DiMondi, Jr. (Irena) of Felton, William DiMondi (Susan) of Rehoboth Beach, Vincent DiMondi (Barbara) of Holly Springs, N.C., John DiMondi (Connie) of New Castle, Mark Vanek (Louise) of Boston Heights, Ohio; and nieces, Diane DiMondi Seibold (John) of Charlton, Mass., Gayle DiMondi Putt (Bill) of Cumming, Ga., Joanne DiMondi of New Castle, Del., Pam Oski (Alex) of Sandown, N.H. and Patricia Farren of Hammondsport, N.Y.
Irma's life will be celebrated at 10 a.m., Wednesday January 6, 2021 when a Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church, 631 S. State Street, Dover, Del. Friends and family wishing to attend are reminded that all COVID-19 protocols will be followed and all attendees must wear a mask at all times.
A private entombment will follow in the DiMondi family mausoleum at Cathedral Cemetery, Wilmington.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Irma's name to The Dover Century Club, P.O. Box 884, Dover, DE 19903.
