Howard 'Snookie' Whitfield, 70

DOVER - Howard "Snookie" Whitfield of Dover died Sunday, Dec. 31, 2006, in Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark. He was 70.

Mr. Whitfield was born Oct. 7, 1936, son of the late Beatrice Darden and Argle Whitfield.

He was educated in the Brooklyn public school system.

Mr. Whitfield worked for Eagle Beef Company, Hicksville, N.Y., for many years as a truck driver. He was employed as a motor vehicle operator for the U.S. Postal Service for 14 years until 1998. In 2001, he started to work for Dover Downs as a part-time security guard. He was honored as employee of the month in September 2006.

He accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior in 1985. He was a member of the Brooklyn Tabernacle Church in New York.

Mr. Whitfield moved to Dover with his wife in 1998. He ministered in the men's choir at the Calvary Assembly of God Church and held weekly Promise Keepers meetings at his home.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by three brothers, Leon Whitfield, Carl Whitfield and Norman Whitfield.

He is survived by his loving wife of 16 years, Margaret Whitfield; three daughters, DeBorah of Kentucky, Cassandra of California and Theodora of New York; two sons, Jeffrey of Florida and Randy of New York; two sisters, Mary Murrain and Myrna Skinner, both of New York; three brothers, Argle, Alvin and Derrick, all of New York; three sisters-in-law, Catherine Darden, Harriet Waites and Florence Whitfield; a brother-in-law, Wardell Skinner; a son-in-law, Leroy Grady; five grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday in Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Dover.

Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at Calvary Assembly of God Church, 1141 E. Lebanon Road, Dover, where friends may call one hour earlier.

Burial will be in Sharon Hill Cemetery, Dover.
