GREENSBORO, Md. - Howard F. Joiner, of Greensboro, died Wednesday, April 23, 2008, in the Caroline Nursing Home, Denton. He was 89.

He was born on June 16, 1918, in Greensboro, the son of the late William Robert Joiner and Florence Evans Joiner.

Mr. Joiner was a World War II U.S. Army veteran and had served in the European Theater.

After the war, he went to work for the Nuttle Lumber Co., where he retired after 23 years as the foreman of the planing mill and drying kiln.

He then worked for the U.S. Postal Service, from which he retired in 1981.

Mr. Joiner was past commander of the Caroline American Legion Post 29, a member of the Greensboro Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7937, the Preston Jr. Order of American Mechanics, the Choptank River Yacht Club and a past member of the Poor Boys Yacht Club.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, William R. Joiner, Robert Joiner, and Walter Joiner.

Mr. Joiner is survived by his wife of 68 years, M. LaRue Joiner of Greensboro; one daughter, Betty Ballas of Federalsburg; four grandchildren, Pamela Todd Wise, Lisa Todd Szewczyk, Scott R. Todd, and Steven A. Ballas; four great-grandchildren, Jason R. Wise, Jesse E. Wise, Rachael Cartwright, and Kendall Szewczyk; and one great-great-grandchild, Abby Porter.

The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Moore Funeral Home, P.A., 12 S. Second St., Denton, where friends may call one hour prior to the service.

Interment will follow in the Denton Cemetery.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests sending memorial donations to the Caroline Hospice Foundation, 613 S. Fifth Ave., Denton, MD 21629.
