Howard Clifton 'Ace' Lewis, 89

DOVER - Howard Clifton "Ace" Lewis died Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009, in Heritage Nursing Home, Dover. He was 89. Mr. Lewis was born Aug. 12, 1919, in Wilmington, to the late Gifford Lewis and Ada Adams Lewis. He graduated from Dover High School. He was a veteran of World War II serving in the United States Army. After the service he graduated from Bliss Electrical School. Mr. Lewis met his wife at a USO dance in Washington, D.C., and were married Aug. 23, 1947. He retired after 34 years from The Delaware State Police Communication Department. After his retirement they moved to Ocean Pines, Md., until 2000 when they returned to Dover. Mr. Lewis was on the Board of Management of Peoples Church of Dover. He was an avid golfer and loved square dancing and round dancing. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Alma Norris. Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife of 62 years, Thelma Livdahl Lewis of Dover; four sons, Randy Lewis and his wife Rhonda of Dover, Gary Lewis and his wife Lynne of Winter Garden, Fla., Carl Lewis of Charleston, S.C., Gene Lewis and his wife Stephanie of Orlando, Fla.; his daughter, Monica Lewis and her husband Lenny Diezi of Casselberry, Fla.; his sister, Erla Marsh of Maitland, Fla.; and seven grandchildren, Kyle, Steven, Shannon, Jennifer, Bryce, Shelby, and Gavin. Memorial services will be 5 p.m., Friday, Aug. 7, at Peoples Church of Dover, 46 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Interment will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions be made to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 100 Commerce Drive, Suite 302, Newark, DE 19713; or Meals on Wheels, c/o Modern Maturity Center, 1121 Forrest Avenue, Dover, DE 19904. Arrangements by Torbert Funeral Chapel, Dover. Letters of condolence may be sent, and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
