DOVER - Homer Matthew Hutchins passed away Thursday, February 4, 2016 at home. Mr. Hutchins was born June 8, 1918 in Dover, Delaware to the late Emmett Hutchins and Florence Willis Hutchins. He was one of eight children. He had served in the United States Army during WWII stationed in Alaska. Mr. Hutchins started his own oil company in 1946, H.M. Hutchins Oil Company in Dover and ran it for 30 years, and handed it down to his son Larry in the 1970's. He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, where he was an active member of the Methodist Men and a member of the Masonic Union Lodge #7 and was a member for 50 years. In 1963 he and his wife Thelma built a house in South Bethany where he enjoyed entertaining friends and family, being out on his boat, taking kids water skiing and sea sledding, fishing, clamming and crabbing. In his later years, Mr. Hutchins enjoyed his coffee group at McDonalds with friends he'd known most of his life. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Thelma (Burris) Hutchins of Dover; son, Larry M. Hutchins of South Bethany; daughter, Debra Davies (Joanne) of Lewes; brother, Gilbert Hutchins (Gladys) of Dover; granddaughters, Mary Ann Davis, Maddison Hutchins and Hanna Hutchins. He also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his brothers Willis, Norman, James, Carlton; sisters, Evelyn (Cameron), and Gladys (Felix). Funeral services will be held 11AM, Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2016 at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover. Friends may call from 5-7 PM Monday evening.
