Hildegard Alice Johnson

KENTON - Hildegard Alice Ruhling Johnson went to her rest Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2011, at her home with loving family. She was born November 19, 1923 in Troppau, Czechoslovakia and moved to Germany in 1929. She and her family hurried to escape Hitler's Germany in 1934 and one of her two brothers got left behind. He later joined their family who had settled in Tokoma Park, Md. Hilda spoke only German and French but quickly learned to speak English. She graduated from Shenandoah Valley Academy, class of 1942 and attended Washington Missionary College School of Nursing 1942-1945. After marrying Ralph Johnson 1946. They moved with two young sons to a farm west of Kenton with few conveniences. She began working at Kent General Hospital in 1953 and accepted a position at the Dover Air Force Base Hospital in 1955 where she worked until retiring in 1988. She was first and foremost a mother and homemaker who enjoyed her garden, canning, cooking and loved her family deeply. She was dedicated to her church family of the Dover Seventh-day Adventist Church. She loved to go to the beach, took cruises to Alaska, St. Lucia, and the Bahamas, saw the sights of Germany, Switzerland, and Paris. She also enjoyed visiting and spending time with family in DC, Monterrey Bay, San Francisco, Kansas City, Berrien Springs, and Orlando. She was preceded in death by her parents, her two brothers, her three sons, Ronald E., Richard E., Roger E.; and her husband, Ralph E. Johnson. She is survived by her two daughters, Ruth Elaine of California and Rita Bozeman of Clayton; her favorite grandson, Jesse and many nieces and nephews. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. Visitation will be 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Funeral service will be 11 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 25, 2011, at the Dover First Seventh-day Adventist Church at New Burton and Wyoming Ave. Burial will follow at Barratt's Chapel Cemetery, Frederica. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. DuPont Hwy., Dover, DE 19901.
