Hila Caulley Ferguson

Hila Caulley Ferguson, 67

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Hila Caulley Ferguson of Chestertown died on Monday, Nov. 12, 2007, at the Chester River Hospital Center. She was 67.

She was the daughter of the late James F. and Mildred Yarnall Caulley.

Born in Brownsville, Pa., Mrs. Ferguson graduated in 1962 from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va.

After marrying her first husband, H. Hurtt Deringer, she moved to Chestertown in 1962.

She worked at Washington College for the Associated Writing Program in the early 1970s.

Later, she worked at the Corsica Bookstore and the Rhodes Gift Shop in Chestertown.

Mrs. Ferguson helped her husband, David, at David H. Ferguson Oriental Rugs in downtown Chestertown.

She was a member of the Emmanuel Episcopal Church Altar Guild and was actively involved in local community organizations including the Kent County Historical Society and the Candlelight Walking Tour.

Mrs. Ferguson was an avid reader and enjoyed walking with her friends.

She is survived by her husband of 18 years, David H. Ferguson; three children, James Caulley Deringer and Harry Hurtt Deringer of Alexandria, Va. and Amanda Hurtt Deringer of Arlington, Va.; three stepdaughters, Holly Ferguson Rhodes, Carolyn Hope Ferguson, and Heather Oakleaf Ferguson of Chestertown; her sisters, Jamie Caulley Gaudion of Dover-Foxcroft, Maine, and Bridget Caulley Burkhart of Houston, Texas; six grandchildren; and two step-grandchildren also survive.

A memorial service will be 2 p.m. today in the Emmanuel Episcopal Church in Chestertown.

The Rev. Daniel L. Gross will officiate.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests donations to Emmanuel Episcopal Church, 101 N. Cross Street, Chestertown, MD 21620.

Marvin V. Williams Jr. Funeral Director in Chestertown made funeral arrangements.
