Herman S. Gassner

GALENA, Md - Herman S. Gassner, of Galena, passed away Dec., 31, 2010, in Christiana Hospital. He was 81. Born August 9, 1929, in Southampton, N.Y., he was the son of the late Ottmar and Friedel Gassner. Mr. Gassner moved to Maryland in 1945, graduated from Galena High School in 1947, and attended Washington College. Mr. Gassner was employed as a superintendent of facilities services for Playtex Family Products Corp. in Dover, Del., for 27 years, retiring in 1991. He joined the Delaware National Guard in 1949 and later transferred to the U.S. Army Reserve, retiring as Lieutenant Colonel. Mr. Gassner was elected to the Kent County Republican Central Committee in 1978. In additional to his civic and military service, Mr. Gassner was an active member of St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Massey where he served as a lay reader and treasurer for many years. He became a member of the Galena Lions Club in 1991. Mr. Gassner is survived by his wife of 58 years, the former Betty Jane Everett; three daughters, Debra Dragone (John) of Galena, Laura Logsdon (Michael) of Ellicott City, Md, and Brenda Austin (Buddy) of Eldersburg, Md; and four granddaughters. Friends may call on Tues., Jan. 4, 2010, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wed., Jan. 5, 2010, at St. Clement's Episcopal Church in Massey, MD. Interment will be in Massey Cemetery.
