Herman J. Schelts

GALENA, MD - Herman J. Schelts, Jr., of Galena, Md., formerly of Rock Hall, Md., died on Mar. 22, 2012 in his son's home. Mr. Schelts was born on June 3, 1926 and raised in Galena, Md., son of the late James Herman, Sr. and Ella O'Neal Schultz. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp Veteran serving in Japan during its occupation after WWII as an airplane mechanic. His career as a carpenter included working for Tarr & White Construction, Woodall & Stidham, Church Hill Lumber and Camp Fairlee Manor and later owning and operating his own business. He had lived in Rock Hall for 34 years until moving back to Galena in Dec. 2011. Herman loved gardening, boating and fishing. Herman was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Weller Schelts; his companion of 34 years, Loretta Clark; a brother, Robert Schultz; and six sisters, Harriett Patchett, Eleanor Lane, Theresa Freeman, Andrea Schultz, Agnes "Pinki" Nickle and Frances Marvel. He is survived by three children, Wayne Schelts and his wife Debby, Gary Schelts and his wife Samantha and Vanessa Hoover all of Galena; two brothers, David Schultz of Seaford, Del., and George Schultz of Chestertown, Md.; a sister, Lucie Woodall of Townsend, Del.; and six grandchildren, J.T. Hoover, Jr., Zach, Marshall, Kyle, Tyler and Cody Schelts. Friends may call on Tuesday evening, Mar. 27, 2012 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Galena Funeral Home of Stephen L. Schaech, 118 W. Cross St. Galena, MD. Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Wednesday, Mar. 28, 2012 at 10 a.m. in St. Dennis Roman Catholic Church, 153 N. Main St. Galena, MD.
