UNDATED (AP) — Arizona State has asked a former chief justice of the Arizona Supreme Court to lead an independent review of the collapse of hockey player Matthew Mayich during an outdoor workout in August. The school said Scott Bales will review Arizona State’s findings and information provided by attorneys representing the Mayich family and hockey team members, as well as by law enforcement. The 21-year-old Mayich collapsed during a workout on the first day the NCAA allows official activities. He suffered from exertional heat stroke that reduced flow of oxygen to his brain and is unlikely to recover, according to family attorney Rob Carey.

UNDATED (AP) — Cincinnati has gone from a five-game losing streak to finish last season to a chance for a 5-0 start this year. The Bearcats play at 3-1 Arizona in a late-night Big 12 matchup. Three of the Big 12's five ranked teams also play Saturday. No. 10 BYU is at TCU, No. 12 Texas Tech goes to Colorado, and No. 20 Houston hosts UCF. Cincinnati was last 5-0 in 2021. The Bears were then still in the American and went on to become the only non-major conference team to make the four-team version of the College Football Playoff.
