Herbert Whaley, 83
LAUREL - Herbert Whaley of Laurel went to be with the Lord Friday, Oct. 5, 2007, at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital, Seaford. He was 83.
Born in Laurel, he was the son of the late Greensberry and Ethel (Workman) Whaley.
Herbert was a World War II Army veteran, proudly serving his country in the 71st Infantry 44th Division. During his time of service, he became a prisoner of war.
After the war he was a self-employed carpenter and farmer. He especially enjoyed gardening and his vegetable stand.
Herbert was a member of the American Legion Post 19, Laurel.
He is survived by his wife, Clara (Stelmack) Whaley of Laurel; his sons, Vincent Whaley and his wife Sharon of Laurel, Wayne Whaley and his wife Connie of Utah, Barry Whaley and his wife Vicky and Anthony Whaley, all of Seaford, Michael Whaley of Farmington, and William Hydock and Steve Hydock, both of Seaford; a daughter, Susan Wessel and her husband Harry of Captains Cove; a brother, Greensberry Whaley of Salisbury, Md.; his sisters, Mildred Steen of Laurel and Erma Waller; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
His first wife, Ruth Whaley, passed away in 1967.
Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Odd Fellows Cemetery, West Street, Laurel, where he will receive full military honors. The Rev. John Van Tine will officiate.
Arrangements by the Hannigan, Short, Disharoon Funeral Home, Laurel.
