Hazel Mae
(Morris) Harris, 92
FELTON - Hazel Mae (Morris) Harris passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 3, 2021 in her home in Canterbury.
Hazel was born to Claude Smith Morris and Helen Lillian (Tucker) Morris on September 8, 1928 in Felton, Delaware. Her parents were hard-working and raised three children on a farm on the outskirts of town. Hazel was proud to be a 1946 Felton High School graduate with just ten other students in her class. During her high school years, Hazel waitressed at the corner gas station/restaurant located just across the street from the school. She later became employed at International Latex, Inc. (Playtex) in Dover, Del., working various office positions for 42 years before retiring in 1989. She has spent her entire life living within a 10-mile radius of where she was born -- a true "Feltonian" to the core.
Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, George Everett Harris; her brother, Earl Morris; her sister, Jeanette Reynolds; and her son-in-law, Bill Caldwell.
She is survived by her only daughter, Debbie Caldwell of Felton, Del.; three grandchildren, Mickey Fisher of Wilmington, N.C., Jeffrey Fisher of Harrisburg, Pa. and Amanda Leone (Carson) of Felton, Del.; one great granddaughter, Liliana Mae Leone of Felton, Del.; numerous cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She is also survived by a very special person, Albert Killen-- they rode the school bus together and have been lifelong friends.
Hazel loved crocheting and knitting, a hobby she continued into her 90s. She made everything from doilies to sweaters to afghans. She crocheted four full-size bedspreads for her family which took her over ten years to complete.
Hazel absolutely loved her home that she and George built together in 1964. Her house and lawn were meticulous, her flowerbeds were pristine, as she was always outside "gardening." She mowed her six acres of property on her Massey Ferguson tractor until she was in her 80's. Then, along came Crawford Melvin who took over the mowing and helped her with various jobs around the property and she grew to love him like a son.
Hazel will be remembered as a very energetic, kind, patient, and happy woman. Some of her favorite past times included boating, crabbing, fishing, water skiing, bowling, golfing, snow skiing and line dancing. A wall of trophies reflect her bowling and golfing achievements, and one of her proudest moments was her Hole in One at Eagle Creek Golf Course back in the 80's.
Hazel was a social butterfly, she was a 41 year member of the Harrington Women of the Moose, an active volunteer with the Felton Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary, a lifelong attendee of the Felton-Viola United Methodist Church, and a frequent patron of the Modern Maturity Center.
She loved her family dearly and made every effort to always be at their sporting events. She had a heart of gold and always made people feel comfortable and welcome. She will be greatly missed.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Christiana Care Home Health, the DE Division of Aging Services, Meals on Wheels, Food Bank of DE, and all her personal at-home caretakers. Their support enabled our sweet Hazel Mae to live her last few years in the comfort of her beloved home.
Services will be held Thursday, May 13, 2021 at Trader Funeral Home, 12 Lotus Street, Dover, Del. at 1 p.m. Family and friends may call from 11 a.m. until time of services. Burial will be at Hopkins Cemetery Felton, Del. Family and friends are invited to Pizzadili Winery at 4 p.m. for fellowship.
In consideration of protecting the family and friends health, public health guidelines enacted for the prevention of the spread of covid-19 virus, limitations on gatherings, physical distancing, use of hand sanitation and masks are in place.
The family would like donations to be made to Felton-Viola United Methodist Church, 101 East Main Street, Felton, DE 19943.
