Harry Sidney McGinnes

Harry Sidney McGinnes, 90

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Harry Sidney McGinnes, of Chestertown, and more recently of Crumpton, passed away on March 4, 2009. He was 90. He was born and raised in Queen Anne's County, the son of the late Harry and Bertha Wallen McGinnes. Following World War II, he lived his adult life and raised his family in Chestertown with his wife, Frances Brown McGinnes. Sgt. Harry S. McGinnes served as a medic in the 115th Infantry Regiment of the 29th Division, landing on Omaha Beach on D-Day. He was a lifelong member of Frank M. Jarman American Legion Post 36 and V.F.W. Post 10063. He worked for the Chestertown Post Office for many years, prior to and following the war, retiring in 1979. Sidney enjoyed traveling during his early retirement years, but his favorite hobby was working. He served as a handyman for many Chestertown residents throughout his years as a postal employee and his retirement years, finally retiring fully when in his eighties. He was predeceased by his wife, Frances; and a brother, Ralph W. McGinnes. He is survived by two sisters, Elsie Trojak of Palo Alto, Calif., and Helen Pardee of Starkeys Corner; three sons, William McGinnes and his wife Lucy of Crumpton, Robert McGinnes and his wife Linda of Frederick, and Jerry McGinnes and his wife Donna of Tolchester; a daughter, Jean Torres-Rivera and husband Santos of Chester Harbor; eight grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by a brother-in-law, his "brother", Winfield Brown; and a special friend and companion of many years, Elizabeth Hicks. Services will be held 2 p.m. Sunday at Fellows, Helfenbein & Newnam Funeral Home, 130 Speer Road, Chestertown, where friends and family may call from noon until 2 p.m. Burial will be in Chester Cemetery, Chestertown. In lieu of flowers, Sidney requested contributions to the First United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 227, Chestertown, MD 21620.
