German, Jr., 86
MILFORD, Del. - Harry I. "Sonny" German, Jr. passed away on February 2, 2022, at Bayhealth Hospital, Sussex Campus, Milford, Delaware.
Harry, or Sonny as he was known to his family, was born and spent his childhood in Oxford, Maryland. Although he and his family would live in other areas of the United States, he never lost his love for "the eastern shore" of Maryland. A resident of Milford for over sixty years, he developed countless friendships, many of them at the Park Place restaurant where he could be seen having lunch throughout the week. Sonny worked at NKS Distributors in Milford for thirty-eight years, retiring in 2005. He shared many stories of his time there and the people/friends that he worked with.
His family and his faith were the two most important things in Sonny's life. He spoke of his family every day, telling many often humorous stories of parents, aunts, uncles and cousins. Sonny cherished time spent with his sister June and cousin Denise. His favorite stories were of the days babysitting Denise's children, Michelle and Kevin, the children he never had. Sonny often told of visits with his cousins in Delaware and Maryland that he so dearly loved. With his devotion to family came his passion for genealogy. He began the hobby at an early age and has volumes of notebooks to chronical his life's work. In 1962, Sonny and his mother, Sara, joined the Worldwide Church of God (now called the Philadelphia Church of God). He was a stalwart member of the church and acquired many lasting friendships in the congregation. Through the church he traveled the world, spent time in numerous countries, and extensively traveled throughout the United States as well.
Sonny was preceded in death by his sister, June German Colona (d. 1952); father, Harry I. German, Sr. (d. 1976); and mother, Sara Bennum German (d. 1979). He is survived by Michelle (nee Moore) Davenport and her son, Jesse Melvin of Clementon, New Jersey; Kevin Moore, his wife Marilyn, and their sons Robert and James of Newark, Delaware; loving cousins in Delaware, Maryland and South Carolina.
Sonny knew no strangers. He was quick with a smile, a laugh, a clap on the back or a hug. He will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him.
Guests will be received on Monday, February 14 from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. with a memorial service beginning at 12 p.m. at Torbert Funeral Chapel South, 1145 E. Lebanon Road (Rt.10), Dover, DE 19901. A graveside service for family will be held at the Gracelawn Memorial Park, 2220 N. DuPont Hwy., New Castle, Delaware 19720.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Nemours Alfred I. DuPont Hospital for Children.
Letters of condolence may be sent, and guestbook signed at www.torbertfuneral.com
