Harry Dean Newell, 78
FELTON - USAF Ret. Maj. Harry Dean Newell of Felton, formerly of Dover, died Saturday, June 2, 2007, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. He was 78.
He was born on Oct. 27, 1928, in Groton, Mass., son of the late Ray and Emily (Johaneson) Newell.
He graduated from Pepperell High School, class of 1946, Pepperell, Mass. He then attended Mount Hermon Preparatory School in Northfield, Mass., graduating in 1947 as a post graduate student and upon completion of his studies there he entered University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Mass. and majored in forestry.
Harry had a love for flying and achieved his pilot"s license at the age of 16.
At the end of his second year at UMass he enlisted in the U.S. Air Forced Pilot Training Program.
He graduated from flight training as a 2nd lieutenant
He flew F-51"s and F-86"s in Korea for a total of 100 missions.
During that time period he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
During Vietnam he trained students how to fly "Puff the Magic Dragon" a C-119 equipped with Gatling guns.
He retired as a major from the U.S. Air Force and went to work for the state of Delaware in the Public Health Department as an accountant from 1972 to 1984.
He enjoyed his retirement by boating, fishing and going to reunions around the world.
Harry was a member of Masonic Lodge, Shriner, Sojourner, Daedalian, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the American Legion and Tall Cedars of Lebanon.
In addition his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Doris J. Newell in 2001.
He is survived by his loving wife of one year, Lois Hoffheinz; a daughter, Tamara Newell and her husband, Gary Attix of Townsend; a son, Joe Newell and his wife, Francine of Felton; a brother, David Newell and his wife, Marcia of Pepperell, Mass.; step-children, Dawn McArdle and her husband, Edward of Philadelphia and Michele Reiser and her husband, James of Cecilton, Md.; and five step-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be 5 p.m. Saturday in the Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour before services.
Burial will be at a later date in Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to ALS Association Greater Philadelphia Chapter, 321 Norristown Rd., Suite 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
