Harold R. 'Welchie' Welch, 80

HARRINGTON - Harold R. "Welchie" Welch, of Harrington, passed away Saturday, June 14, 2008, at Greenwood Country Rest Home. He was 80.

Mr. Welch, son of the late Harold Ralph Welch and Elsie Welch Richards, grew up in Milford.

He attended school there, starting in a one room schoolhouse.

Mr. Welch married Romaigne King in 1949. They lived in Milford until 1953, when they moved to Harrington.

He began his military service in 1945 by enlisting in the Air Force. Mr. Welch was discharged in 1948 as a sergeant.

In 1949, he enlisted in the Delaware Army National Guard and served in enlisted and warrant officer status for more than 37 years, retiring in 1986.

During his military career, Mr. Welch received a number of awards. Some of those include the World War II Victory Medal, Armed Forces Reserve Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Conspicuous Service Cross, Medal for Military Merit, Distinguished Rifleman, Governor's Ten, Medal for Service in Aid of Civil Authority and many trophies for marksmanship, earned at state and national matches.

Mr. Welch was a life member and past post commander of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6483 of Milford.

He served as chairman of the Milford Veterans Affairs Committee, helping to organize Memorial Day ceremonies for a number of years.

Mr. Welch loved his country and wanted to honor all veterans on Memorial Day.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Romaigne "Penny" Welch; his brother, George Welch; and his stepfather, Franklin Richards.

He is survived by his three daughters, Helen W. Galenski, Gloria DeNigris and Linda Welch; a brother-in-law, Harry Brandt King; four grandchildren, Scott Melvin, Holly Castell, Christopher Castell and Suzanne C. Greene; six great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be 2 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Berry-Short Funeral Home, 119 N.W. Front St., Milford, where friends may call after noon.

Interment will be in Milford Community Cemetery.
