DOVER - Guy Coleman Coker, Jr. died unexpectedly and peacefully on Nov. 14, 2015. Guy was born on April 7, 1930 in Montgomery, Ala. to Guy Coleman Coker Sr. and Ernestine Coker (nee Lee). He grew up and attended school in Bayonne, N.J. He enlisted in the United State Army in 1951, and served in an infirmary, in Germany, during the Korean War. After returning from Germany, Guy married his sweetheart, Joan Christine Bowman, on July 3, 1954. Over the next eleven years, the couple welcomed four children into their home. He began his successful 31 year career with the General Foods Corporation in N.Y. and after several years he was transferred to Dover. He worked in Research and Development and towards the end of his career was listed as an inventor on three important US patents with General Foods. Guy was proud of the fact that he had quit smoking during the first nationwide Great American Smokeout. His family was thankful for this because it allowed them to enjoy many more years with him in their lives. After retirement, Guy volunteered in the lab at Kent General Hospital for a number of years. His family remembers him as a loving & generous man who was an avid reader, rising before dawn every morning to read his newspapers. He enjoyed baking and had quite a sweet-tooth. His family enjoyed most of his baked creations. Guy especially enjoyed becoming and being a grandfather, and was very proud of all of his grandchildren. Guy is survived by his wife of 61 years, Joan Christine Coker (nee Bowman) also of Dover; his son, Brian (Gayle) Coker of Dover; two daughters, Sharon Back of St Peters, Mo. and Jill (Mark) Brown of Ashland City, Tenn.; his daughter-in-law, Wilsa Coker; his grandsons, Jeremy Lucas of Bear and Matthew (Danielle) Neiman of White Plains, Md.; four granddaughters, Christine (John) Faust of Tampa, Fla., Jessica Back of Troy, Mo., Ashley Neiman of Chesapeake, Va., and Meghan Back of St Peters, Mo.; and his great-granddaughter, Cora Faust of Tampa, Fla. He is preceded in death by his father Guy Coleman Coker, Sr., by his mother, Ernestine Coker (nee Lee), both of Bayonne N.J., and by his eldest son, Lee Allen Coker of Shadyside, Ohio. Funeral services will be held 1 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 25, at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Rd., Bear, Del. 19701. Letters of condolences may be sent and guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
