MILFORD - G. Gardner Shugart, Jr., passed away at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2017. Gardner was born in Washington, D.C., on May 23, 1938, son of the late Gervis and Marguerite Shugart. He grew up in Upper Marlboro, Md., where he attended Frederick Sasscer High School and continued his education at the University of Maryland graduating in 1960 with a degree in business administration. He was also a proud veteran of the Army Reserves. Mr. Shugart was employed in the Department of Administrative Services with the State of Delaware and retired after more than 30 years. He was an active member of the Milford Community and devoted many years of service to the Milford Lions Club, Milford Public Library, Avenue Methodist Church and Shawnee Country Club. Gardner adored his grandchildren; known to them affectionately as "Pa", loved playing golf, and held a special place in his heart for his golden retrievers. He will always be remembered for his gentle and kind manner and fun spirit. He is survived by his loving wife of 53 years, Janice Scott Shugart; his children, Carrie Townsend and husband, Fred, Gard Shugart, and Katie Bressler and husband, Bernly; four grandchildren, Rick Townsend, Haydn Bressler, Swimley Bressler, and Beatrice Bressler; and his sister, Shirley Duvall and husband, Peter Wood Duvall, and their three sons. A memorial service to celebrate Gardner's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 18, 2017 at Christ Episcopal Church, 200 N. Church St, Milford. Burial will be held privately. In lieu of flowers or donations, the family asks that in honor of Gardner you take a moment to give your grandchildren an extra hug, play a round of golf or take the time to share kind words with the people you love.
