George is survived by Jeane Meade Vest, his wife of more than 41 years; his brother, James Weston Vest; his brother-in-law, John Meade and his wife Jenny; a sister-in-law, Patsy Meade; his nieces, Linda Vest Klein, Lisbeth Vest Armstrong, Martha Robb Vest and Barbara Meade Carney; a nephew, Jimmy Meade; as well as numerous grandnephews and grandnieces.

George graduated from Austin High School and earned a Bachelor of Arts from Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., before he entered the U.S. Navy in 1951.

He attained the rank of lieutenant junior grade. He then served in the U.S. Naval Reserve until 1966.

George then taught junior high and high school math in Illinois and Massachusetts.

He was active in the Kiwanis and in his church choir.
