Glading, 88
George Richard Glading, went to be with his Lord and Savior on January 17, 2021 at Kent General Hospital, Dover, after a long illness.
He was born July 5, 1932 in Wenonah, N.J., the son of the late Samuel Mead Glading and Jean Kennedy Glading. His youth was spent in Wenonah and Philadelphia before graduating from William Penn High School, New Castle, Del.
After high school he worked briefly for the DuPont Company and joined the Naval Reserves, until he was called to active duty and served aboard the USS Mount Olympus 1953-1954.
When his military commitment was completed in 1955, he attended the University of Delaware where he earned both Bachelor and Masters Degrees. In 1961 he was hired by the Capital School District, Dover as an 8th grade Earth Science teacher, first at Dover Junior High, then William Henry Middle and Central Middle Schools. During those 34 years of teaching, he took additional graduate classes at Franklin and Marshall College, Western Michigan University, and several National Science Foundation summer courses. He also ran the Ralph Hazleton Planetarium at William Henry for several years.
After retirement in 1995, wood working became his passion. In his garage workshop he created antique reproductions, refinished antiques, and built furniture and cabinets for family and church. Always a bargain hunter, he frequented Spence's Bazaar and yard sales, looking for items he needed (or maybe didn't need) for unbelievably low prices.
An active member of First Baptist Church, Dover, he sang in the Sanctuary Choir, taught Sunday School, and served on the Building Committee and Board of Trustees.
He was predeceased by his parents; and his brother, Robert Mead Glading.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years, Lois Arnott Glading; two children (twins) son, Mark Richard Glading (Emily) of Wilmington, Del.; and daughter, Martha Glading Steinruck (Jay) of Hummelstown, Pa.; grandchildren, Julia Glading, Allie Glading, Kurt Steinruck, Lauren Steinruck; and "adopted" daughter, Theresa Thornburg.
The family wishes to express their loving gratitude to his caregivers from Griswold Home Care, Kent General Hospital, and The Center at Eden Hill.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to First Baptist Church, 301 Walker Road, Dover, DE 19904.
Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, January 30, 2021, at First Baptist Church of Dover, 301 Walker Rd., Dover. Friends may call at the church one hour prior to the service. Internment will follow after services at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Camden.
Letters of condolence may be placed and guestbook signed at torbertfuneral.com.
Services will be live streamed on the churches YouTube page. www.youtube.com/channel/UCNfxV8Yca1QmiLxI6zWpy0Q
Due to the COVID restrictions we are requiring masks and social distancing during the funeral.
