George R. Canavan, 89

LEWES - George R. Canavan of Lewes, formerly of Long Island, N.Y., passed away Saturday, Aug. 4, 2007, in Harbor Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Lewes. He was 89.

Mr. Canavan was born Dec. 16, 1917, in Woodhaven, N.Y., son of the late Robert and Rose (Snow) Canavan.

He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was retired from a career as a lineman for the New York Telephone Co.

Mr. Canavan served as the captain of the Rescue and Emergency Squad of the Roosevelt Fire Department on Long Island. He was a member of Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church in Oak Orchard, a member of the Knights of Columbus, where he was a Past Grand Knight, a member of the St. Vincent DePaul Conference and a member of American Legion Post 28, Oak Orchard.

He is survived by his loving wife of 39 years, Theodora (Bartkus) Canavan; a son and a daughter-in-law, George R. Jr. and Linda Canavan; a daughter and a son-in-law, Marie and Gene Casazza; a brother, John Canavan; a sister, Florence Canavan; four grandchildren, Andrew Canavan, Todd Canavan, Michael Casazza and Devon Casazza; two great-grandchildren, Kieran and Kaelyn; and many loving nieces and nephews.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, Long Neck Road, Millsboro.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday in Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, where friends also may call one hour earlier.

Graveside services will be 12:30 p.m. Thursday in St. Charles Cemetery, Conklin Street, Farmingdale, N.Y.

Instead of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to Mary Mother of Peace Catholic Church, 202 Edward St., Georgetown, DE 19947.
