MAGNOLIA - George Leland Shane of Magnolia (and formerly of Smyrna) peacefully passed away on Monday, August 29, 2016, while at home surrounded by loving family and friends. George was born on May 31, 1943, in Chester, Pa., the son of the late Fred J. Shane and the late Anna May Shane (Gardner). George grew up in Smyrna, and graduated from John Bassett Moore High School. In July of 1963, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his Country with honor, which included a tour in Vietnam where he was awarded a Purple Heart as well as other commendations. George worked at Reichhold Chemical, Southern States, and Georgia Gulf throughout his working years. He retired due to health reasons, and received a heart transplant in 1994. Due to that miraculous gift of life, he was able to meet and marry the love of his life, Janet S. Shane. Together, they spent over 21 years sharing a love like no other. George enjoyed working in his garden, woodworking, traveling, and was the king of smooth on the dance floor. He was a quiet man, truly a man of honor, who cherished his family, friends, and his country always. The simple things in life made George happy - He was blissfully content having his coffee on his back deck with his Baby Angel and the puppies in the morning to start his day. George was a member of the Dover Elks Lodge, #1903, a charter member of the Smyrna Moose Lodge and a member of the Smyrna-Clayton V.F.W. George was preceded in death by his father and mother; and a brother, Rodney L. Shane. In addition to his wife, George is survived by his son, F. Scott Shane and his wife, Michaela of Smyrna; a grandson, Brian L. Shane (whom he adored); a step-daughter, Kelly S. Bennett; a step-son, William M. Jopp; three grandchildren, Colson K. Bennett, Alexis B. Jopp, and Aiden M. Jopp; a brother-in-law, Michael K. Brown and his wife, Mary L. Brown; and many cousins. He loved his three Australian shepherds: Beaudy, Harley, and Misty – he considered them family. George was a good man with a wonderful heart and will be sorely missed by all his family and friends. He was the kind of man who treated all of his family with love and kindness which he displayed to his extended family as if they were his own. A viewing will be 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesday, September 6, 2016, and again 10 a.m. to 11 a.m., Wednesday, September 7, 2016, in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main Street in Smyrna. Funeral services will begin at 11am on Wednesday. Burial with military honors will follow at Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna. If desired, in lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to The Gift of Life Donor Program, 401 N. 3rd St, Philadelphia, PA 19103. Condolence letters may be sent by visiting www.fariesfuneralhome.com.
