WILMINGTON - George B. McVey of Wilmington died Sunday, Dec. 24, 2006, in Paoli Memorial Hospital in Paoli, Pa. He was 87.
Mr. McVey was born March 14, 1919, son of the late Taylor and Ethel McVey.
He was raised in Rising Sun, Md., and attended West Nottingham Church and West Nottingham Academy during his youth in Colora, Md.
Mr. McVey was employed by a Borden dairy farm in New Jersey before joining the Army Air Corps.
While with the Army Air Corps, he rose to the rank of technical sergeant.
He was an aircraft mechanic with the 314th Fighter Squadron, "The Hawks," of the 324 Fighter Group during World War II and served throughout northern Africa, Sicily, Italy and France. He was awarded the Bronze Star.
Mr. McVey retired from Bond Bread (General Baking Co.) after 29 years of service and was later employed with Angerstein"s. He was employed with Creative Home Solutions at the time of his death.
He enjoyed working, hunting, boating on the Chesapeake Bay, reading, gardening, attending Dickinson Organ Recitals, traveling and being independent.
Mr. McVey was a member of Armstrong Masonic Lodge 26, A.F & A.M.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 52 years, Jane Baldwin McVey; a sister, Betty Stone; and a son in-law, Charles T. Crowder Jr.
He is survived by two daughters and a son-in-law, Nancy L. Crowder of Wilmington and Patricia J. and James M. Dixon of Lancaster, Pa.; a son and a daughter-in-law, Michael T. and Debra McVey of Middletown; a sister, Doris Reynolds of Rising Son; six grandchildren, Dale Wood Jr., John Dixon, Thomas Dixon, Kelly Hillary, Ashli McVey and Shauna McVey; and three great-grandchildren, Steven Dixon, Emma Dixon and Clare Hillary.
Services will be 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 20, 2007, at Mealey Funeral Home, Limestone and Milltown roads in Wilmington, where friends may call one hour earlier.
Entombment with military honors will be private at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 2465 Chesapeake City Road, Bear.
Instead of flowers, memorial contributions may be to Bryn Mawr Rehab Hospital, 414 Paoli Pike, Malvern, PA 19355-3300.
