BRIDGEVILLE - George Andrew Dixon of Bridgeville was born Sept. 2, 1934, in Farmington, to the late Joshua and Estella (Pollitt) Dixon. He departed this life at the age of 73 at Christiana Care-Christiana Hospital, Newark, on Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2007.
George received his early education in Bridgeville at the Phyllis Wheatley School, and also at Jason High School, Georgetown.
He received Jesus Christ as his Lord and savior in 1975.
George was a member of the Delmarva Evangelistic Church of Salisbury, Md., under the leadership of the late great Pastor Ray Chamberlin, now under the leadership of Pastor Ruth Chamberlin.
He was a loving and kind husband, father, brother, grandfather and friend. He would always greet those he loved with his beautiful smile and tender hugs.
One of George"s hobbies as a younger boy was playing ball with his brothers.
He always had a love for farming and gardening when he was growing up. He had a green thumb for producing the most beautiful gardens and flowers beds, and kept his yard neatly groomed.
George"s occupation was farming in the Sussex County area, also working for the state of New Jersey, from which he retired.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by six brothers, Joshua, William, Isaac, Nathaniel, Clinton and Ruben; and three sisters, Mary, Vivian and Lena Dixon.
George is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley L. Dixon of Bridgeville; two sisters, Helen Pritchett of Harrington, and Dorothy Gayle and brother-in-law Neville (Ashely) of Greenwood; one brother, Robert Dixon and sister-in-law Myrna of Bridgeville; one daughter, Joyce Ann Smith of Wilmington; two sons, George Dixon Jr. and daughter-in-law Patricia of St. Paul, Minn., and Bryan Lewis of Bridgeville; 22 grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be noon Thursday at Victory Temple Church, Coverdale Cross Road, Bridgeville, where friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon. Burial will be in Middleford Cemetery, Seaford.
Arrangements are being handled by Bennie Smith Funeral Home, Seaford.
