FELTON - Gary W. Down passed away from congestive heart failure Saturday, March 26, 2011, in Kent General Hospital. He was 62. Gary was born on Jan. 5, 1949, in Altoona, Pa. He suffered from autism and mental retardation all his life, but these conditions did not stop him from being a deeply loving individual with a unique sense of humor. Strouse, Gary's nickname, loved blue skies, antique cars, carousels, and eating out every Friday night. Gary was preceded in death by his mother, Eleanor H. Down (Boggs); and father, Retired MSgt. William E. Down. He is survived by two sisters, Mary and her husband Robert Guyton of Brunswick, Maine, and Carole A. Gallagher and her husband Fred who have been his caregivers for the past 15 years; niece, Amy Perkins and her husband Paul of Keedysville, Md.; nephews, Fred Gallagher and his wife Jill, Bill Gallagher and his wife Carmen, and John Gallagher and his companion Rachel Vaughn; and all of his friends and counselors at the Woodside Center. A memorial service will be 7 p.m., Tuesday at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming. Interment will be at Gettysburg National Cemetery with his mother and father at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Woodside Center, 941 Walnut Shade Rd., Dover, DE 19901. Letters of condolences can be sent via www.pippinfuneralhome.com.
