ANNAPOLIS, Md. - French Donald Mackes, of Annapolis, and Fenwick Island, Del., died at home in Annapolis on Jan. 30, 2009. He was 73. Mr. Mackes was born July 13, 1935, in Pennsylvania and raised in Dover, Del. He earned an A.B. degree from Dickinson College and an M.A. degree in Correctional Administration from Coppin State University. He retired after thirty years service from the Maryland Division of Parole and Probation in 1992, including thirteen years as Regional Administrator in charge of field services for Baltimore City. A devout Christian, born again in 1982, he was active with Bible studies, leading praise and worship music and was a lay speaker. A longtime volunteer in prison ministry, he was a cofounder of R.O.A.D. to New Life Ministries, a support organization for Christian ex-offenders. He was a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of the Elks #622. He enjoyed boating, crabbing, tennis, leading sing-a-longs with his guitar and spending time with family and friends, particularly at the family beach home in Fenwick Island. Surviving are his beloved wife of 50 years, Cari Mackes; son, French Mackes Jr. of Virginia Beach, Va.; son, Joe Mackes of Crofton; son, Charley Mackes of Pasadena; brother, David Mackes of Fenwick Island; and six grandchildren. There will be memorial services at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, at Weems Creek Baptist Church, 600 N. Bestgate Road, Annapolis, MD 21401 and at 3 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, at Fenwick Island Baptist Church, 36805 Lighthouse Road, Selbyville, DE 19975, where he was a deacon. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either of the above churches.
