LEWES - Frank A. Hopkins Jr. of Lewes, formerly of Runnemede, N.J., passed away peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008, at his home. He was 87.
He was born in Keene, N.H., son of the late Frank and Alice (Sanderson) Hopkins.
Frank graduated from high school in 1939 and then went into the U.S. Navy serving during World War II, where he received several commendations. He served aboard the USS Hornet from its christening until the Japanese sunk the ship in 1942. Frank then served aboard the USS Princeton until it was sunk in 1944. He then served in Corpus Christi, Texas, until his discharge in 1946.
Frank was a machinist for Westinghouse Electric in Lester, Pa., retiring in 1979 after 20 years of service.
Frank was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Runnemede and a lifetime member of the Runnemede Volunteer Fire Department.
He had a wonderful sense of humor and enjoyed crossword puzzles, camping, traveling and making wood crafts.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 54 years, Fayette Hopkins, in 1995; and a brother, Edwin Hopkins, who was killed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, on Dec. 7, 1941, aboard the USS Oklahoma.
He is survived by his children, Edwin T. Hopkins and his wife Marie of Runnemede, Faye A. Boore of Joy Beach in Lewes and Louis F. Hopkins and his wife Jean of Lewes; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandson; and his best friend, Midget, the Jack Russell Terrier.
A memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro.
Burial will be private.
Instead of flowers, the family suggests contributions in Frank's memory to The Gull House, 38149 Terrace Road, Rehoboth Beach, DE 19971.
