SEAFORD - Frances Christine Harris, 70, died Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Nanticoke Memorial Hospital in Seaford. Born in Seaford, she was the daughter of the late Thomas and Marian Walker Johnson. Her late husband, Freeman Harris died in the late 70's. She was a 1957 graduate of the former William C. Jason Comprehensive High School and matriculated at the former Delaware State College, now Delaware State University, receiving a Bachelor's equivalency in Home Economics. For more than fifteen years, she was employed at the First State Community Action Agency, formerly Sussex County Community Action Agency. She served as Center Director at the Laurel site and Program Director for the Head Start Programs in Laurel, Lewes, and Georgetown. She was also a foster parent and owner/operator of Miss Chris' Discovery Child Care Center. More recently, she served as Head Teacher and substitute teacher at Laverty Lane Head Start in Bridgeville. She was a faithful lifelong member of John Wesley U.M. Church in Seaford; serving as choir director, trustee, finance chair, Sunday school teacher, Lay Speaker, VBS teacher, Yesterday's Youth Chorus, The Trio (Clem, Chris, & Gwen); as well as a member of the Camp Meeting Committee and Finance Board. Most recently, she served as Lay Leader, Youth Choir Director, member of United Methodist Women, Prayer Group, Senior Choir, Finance Secretary, Choir chairperson, Dance coordinator, Camp Meeting organizer, and a member of the Staff Pastor Relations Committee. She also served as a coordinator of weddings, an arts and crafts master, and member of the Second Generation Community Chorus of Federalsburg, Md. In 1961 she was initiated into the Epsilon Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. at Delaware State College. She was also a Charter member (1998) of the Sussex County Alumnae chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., celebrating her 50th year as a sorority member. Her survivors include two sisters, Rev. Dr. Geraldine J. Jones of Dover and Brenda J. (Yuan) Lopez of Springfield, Mass.; one aunt, Pauline W. Wilkins of Dover; one nephew, Blair W. Johnson of Springfield, Mass.; and two nieces, Monica L. Johnson of Dover and Christina L. Salisbury of Springfield, Mass. Funeral service will be 1 p.m., Thursday, June 14, 2012 at John Wesley U.M. Church in Seaford where friends may call two hours prior to service, with an Omega Omega service being held at 12:30 p.m. Interment will be in Macedonia AME Church Cemetery in Seaford.
