Florence Clara (Burris) Baker, 90

SALISBURY, Md. - Florence Clara (Burris) Baker of Salisbury passed away peacefully Monday, Jan. 8, 2007, in Coastal Hospice at the Lake, Salisbury, after a brief stay. She was 90.

Mrs. Baker, formerly of Bridgeville, made her home with her daughter and caregivers, Adele (Baker) Davenport and Charles T. Parsons.

She was born Feb. 7, 1916, the youngest child of the late Addison and Sallie (Stuart) Burris.

She was a graduate of Greenwood High School and Goldey Beacom College.

Mrs. Baker worked as a bookkeeper and secretary, retiring in 1981 from the Woodbridge School District.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Charles W. Baker Jr., in 1994; three brothers, Lee Burris, Russell Burris and Chester Burris; a sister, Myrtle (Burris) Hastings; several in-laws, aunts and uncles; and a niece and her husband, Louise (Hastings) and William Elliott.

She is also survived by a son, Charles "Chuck" A. Baker of Seaford; a daughter-in-law, Peggy M. Baker; four grandchildren, W. Thomas Phillips and wife Beth of Fruitland, Casey Baker of Bridgeville, Douglas W. Phillips of Ocean Pines and Christie Baker of Seaford; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa Nichols of Seaford, Shannon Baker of Bridgeville and Dustin Phillips and Jana Phillips, both of Fruitland; a cousin, Grace Butler Pintz and her husband Fred of Bridgewater, Mass.; many nieces, nephews and cousins, among them Jean Hastings McGee and her husband Everett of Bridgeville and their family, Phyllis Hastings Davis and her husband Russell of Milford and their family, Donald Hastings of Bridgeville, Wayne Burris and his wife Nancy of New York and their family, Michelle Kenerly and her husband Don of North Carolina and their family and the family of the late Louise and William Elliott of Florida.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday in Parsell Funeral Homes & Crematorium, Hardesty Chapel, 202 Laws St., Bridgeville.

The Rev. Joseph Barth will officiate.

Burial will follow in Bridgeville Cemetery.

Instead of flowers the family suggests memorial contributions to Coastal Hospice Inc., P.O. Box 1733, Salisbury, MD 21802-1733; or at her request, in honor of her 8 year-old great-grandson, Dustin Phillips, to Johns Hopkins Children's Center, Office of Development, One Charles Center, 100 N. Charles St., Suite 200, Baltimore, MD 21201.
