Ethel Lee (Outerbridge) Miller, 84
CAMDEN - Ethel Lee (Outerbridge) Miller completed her life's journey and went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, in Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, Dover. She was 84.
She was born March 19, 1923, in Philadelphia, to the late Moses and Frances Outerbridge.
Ethel was the fourth of 10 children.
She attended the Philadelphia public schools and graduated from the former all-girls school, William Penn High School.
Ethel accepted Jesus Christ at an early age and attended West Bethlehem Baptist Church and later became a member of the Zion Baptist Church in Philadelphia.
Ethel met and married Richard E. Miller Sr. on Feb. 21, 1942. Of this union three children were born, Frances, Richard Jr. and Nathaniel.
When she lived in Philadelphia, she was the first African-American cashier and manager at the American Store, now called Acme.
Ethel and her husband also owned and operated a variety store and restaurant.
After moving to Delaware in 1984, she joined Calvary Baptist Church and was a deaconess and the much beloved mother of the church.
She was a charming lady of great character and everybody loved her.
Ethel was a wonderful mother and wife, and loved to crochet blankets, pocketbooks and pot holders.
She leaves to cherish her memory her devoted and loving husband of 66 years, Deacon Richard E. Miller Sr.; one daughter, Frances Miller and her special friend Earl; one son, Nathaniel and his wife Mildred; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; one brother and sister-in-law; four sisters and three brothers-in-law; a host of nieces and nephews; and many friends, including special friends, Helen Brown and Valerie Barcliff, and the Calvary Baptist Church family.
Services will be 7 p.m. Monday in Calvary Baptist Church, Forrest Avenue, Dover, where friends may call two hours prior.
Burial will be 9 a.m. Tuesday in Sharon Hills Memorial Park, Dover.
